Getting Started on Slide Guitar with Ariel Posen.

In this lesson, Ariel gives us the low down and how you can get started with Slide Guitar. We'll talk about techniques, gear, and ideas you need to apply to make this technique work with your playing.

💡 If you haven't already, learn slide guitar fundamentals with my Beginner Guide to Slide Guitar.

First things first: the slide itself is the first important factor here. What works for one might not work for others; think of your slide guitar as a comfortable glove, not a random accessory. You shouldn't necessarily buy the first one you see at your guitar store!

It needs to fit properly and feel good enough to move freely while playing. The slide type will affect how you play, as some slides work better than others on certain types of strings and frets.

Then there's the actual technique itself. It's embellishing what you're already doing. You aim to play notes on the fretboard with one hand and move up or down the neck with another, plucking strings and sliding along them at different fingerboard points. Lots to digest here!

Don't let the word Theory turn you away!

Music Theory is like a magical ingredient that will help you connect everything: notes, chords, scales, and how it all comes together in keys - so you can finally play freely.
