I'm a guitar teacher, but I love playing the ukulele, and I figured you might need some help if you're unboxing your new 4-string friend! It's super easy, and the fastest way of tuning your ukulele might be getting a clip-on tuner or even an app - but choose an accurate tuner. Especially if you're a complete beginner, having a tuner - or using the audio from this tutorial - will help you a lot!

3 Easy Steps to Tune Your Ukulele

Starting on the ukulele? Follow these 3 easy steps, and you'll get your instrument in tune! Here we go:

Step 1 - Get an App!

As I mentioned, a clip-on tuner (usually more accurate!) or a great tuner app is likely to help you out, as it gives you the sound you're looking for! You can also use my video tutorial as a guide, but consider getting yourself a good tuner!

Step 2 - Check the Strings

Your ukulele has 4 strings. These are the open string notes on the ukulele:

G - the thickest string, closer to your face.
C
E
A - the thinnest string!

You'll get used to moving your tuning keys clockwise and anticlockwise as you get used to tuning your instrument. For now, as a guideline, you'll turn it anticlockwise for tuning a string down!

Step 3 - Check the Sound

Once you tuned all the strings, strum down - you should get a C6 chord! :) Check out the video lesson to listen to it - a tuned ukulele has a very specific sound! Did you get it right?

💡 Get the trick! When you tune your ukulele, you should get the notes sounding like they say my dog has fleas.

It might sound funny, but this is a very cool trick! If you remember the sound of it - you'll be able to tune your ukulele by ear. It's way easier than tuning a guitar, and it's a great practice to develop your listening. :)
