I've been playing music with my daughter Vivi since she was born. All the beautiful memories we create together are fantastic. Kids get interested in the instrument, the strings, and the sounds, especially if they like the music and can connect with it. Of course, Vivi wasn't always so into it. However, exploring the ukulele when she was still a baby, then songs she loved on the guitar, flourished her interest in music over the years.

It's awesome that she now wants a pink guitar just like mine, and she's practicing hard so I can get her one!

But anyway. This project started because, a few years back, Vivi was really into singing, and I wanted to enjoy that moment of jamming with her. :)

I knew that playing the songs she enjoyed would make a real difference in keeping her interested in our music time together. Still, I couldn't find reliable songbooks with the songs she wanted to sing or the ones I wanted her to enjoy. So I made them!

This project started with the Children's Songs for Mums & Dads Songbook - now called 101 Children's Songs on Ukulele! - that many of you already know. Why Playing Children's Songs?

You probably already know that research shows music ignites child development. The benefit seems to apply to all different areas! Exposure to musical instruments and music during childhood encourages the development of social skills, but not only! It also enhances memory, motor abilities through dancing or playing, and mathematical skills. Not a bad combo, eh? :)

Music classes may be a great way to expose children to guitar and other string instruments! Still, if your kid is still too young or you don't have access to music education for children, providing music time at home will already be super fun and beneficial.

Tips to Get Your Children Onboard!

Just open your Kindle or tablet, show them the songbooks, and ask them to choose a song you can try and play together. All songs use easy open chords, and any beginner will be able to play them on the guitar or the ukulele! Although I haven't written these songbooks to teach kids how to play, you can start showing them simple chords and notes and allow them to strum along with you. If you're completely new to guitar or the ukulele, some previous rehearsals won't hurt! :) Don't forget you can use my free lessons and tutorials to help you with any additional question or issue you might encounter, but overall - these songs are an "open the book and play!" difficulty level. ;)

It's also very important to keep music time with your children fun! If I start a sing-along with my daughter and she loses interest, I know I have to get more creative with it next time. Forcing children to participate might have the opposite effect and turn them off the music, so try to keep it enjoyable! These are a few things you can try:

Encourage children to dress up for some songs! You can create a story around your music time; it'll be loads of fun.
Use their favorite toys as props. It might help to keep them entertained and enjoying it!
Allow them to film the session and role-play!

Your children will love spending some music time with you. And I'm sure you'll enjoy it too! Music helps you form a magical and deep bond with children, which you will likely remember for the rest of your lives.
