Now we are right up the dusty end of the guitar neck. The frets are close together and it can be a little awkward when you first get up there - but all it takes is a little practice and you will find that it is not that hard - in fact it can be easy to get some cool sounds and stretches are not so hard.
You will find that playing on the thickest two strings can be pretty hard, and they kinda sound funny too - so don't worry about playing them too much!STill worth practicing, but don't worry if you don't play those notes much when you are improvising.
This is the last of our position learning - so take this time to do some revision and MAKE SURE YOU KNOW ALL YOUR POSITIONS SO FAR BEFORE YOU ADD THIS ONE!!!
Position 5 - (G shape from CAGED system)
 |
This can be a hard one to use... well it isn't, but it can seem strange until you get some licks learnt.
Alternatives
There are many alternatives for playing this one - shown in the video too. Mostly it depends on where you are on the neck. Because we are learning it up the neck the frets are close together so we'll use fingers 1 and 3. If it was further down the neck we would use fingers 1 and 4, but this is really up to your preference.
In the key of A
In this blues course we are playing all our licks and scales in the key of A - so the root note (on the 6th string) will go on the 17th fret. Gets the dust off ;)
Start and end on the lowest root note
Please don't forget to start and end on the lowest root note and get the correct sound of the scale in your head as you practice. |
Position 5 - (G shape from CAGED system)
 |
Make sure you memorise where the blue notes are found. You can work out how to play it as a scale if you like, but be aware that the blue note on the 5nd and 4st strings are the same note - so don't play it twice!
