The next stage is to learn Position 3 scales. Check out the Minor Pentatonic and then check out where the blue notes are found around it.
But make sure that you know how to use Positions 1 and 2 well before you start on this stuff... There is NO point in knowing lots of scales if you can't use them.
Position 3 - (C shape from CAGED system)

This might seem tricky at first but there are lots of cool tricks in it.
Alternatives
Using fingers 1 and 3 all the way up is common. Also using fingers 1 and 4 for strings 2 and 3. Shown is the one I play most of the time.
As you hopefully realising - what finger you use to play a note is not important. It only matters when you have to play something very technical or very fast. And even then a lot of the time you will change it!
In the key of A
In this blues course we are playing all our licks and scales in the key of A - so the root note (on the 5th string) will go on the 12th fret.
Start and end on the lowest root note
Please don't forget to start and end on the lowest root note and get the correct sound of the scale in your head as you practice. |

Make sure you memorise where the blue notes are found. You can work out how to play it as a scale if you like, but be aware that the blue note on the 4th and 3rd strings are the same note - so don't play it twice!

The note on the 3rd string can take the 3rd or 4th finger (yes I just noticed it is different from the fingering above...) but like I have said, it matters not when you are making music! |
